FatCat's History

Fat Cats old
Many centuries ago, the natural harbor of Avila Beach area was used by the Spaniard and Portuguese to replenish fresh water and to rest after rough passage around Point Conception.

In later times, smugglers used the port for illegal nighttime movement of liquor. Large quantities of booze came ashore in the area now known as Pirate’s Cove just south of Fat Cats and in the port itself. G-men had a hard time catching the persons involved as it was a community effort and outsiders were not welcome.

In 1954, the citizens of Southern San Luis Obispo County voted to create and fund a Harbor District for the Port San Luis Area. Around this time, the Harbor District built the port Master’s home. All harbor building was directed through the Harbor Master at the site. When the Harbor Commission offices were built and the Port Master’s home was no longer needed, it was transformed into a rustic restaurant named Marcie’s.

Start of Fat Cats Cafe
In January of 1985, we purchased Marcie’s and the renovation started. In June of that year, Fat Cats was opened for business.

The Fat Cats name came from a big yellow and black that adopted the restaurant during construction and stayed on for some time after.

Chef Inocente Garcia’s award winning menu is not only the recipient of many awards, but is a feast for the senses. Sunset Magazine has deemed Fat Cats Café, “The place where the locals go!”

Our unique restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy a view of the beautiful Pacific Ocean and Port San Luis Harbor.
